Second place is elective when you are a king and have only one duke. Premature deaths are not that common and I can usually plan to have a non-insane kid in age range when I die. I used to like elective but i dont like the chance that my vassals dont like my only heir so when i die i lose my kingdom title and my heir becomes a crappy count or duke.
